The women's basketball team secured their first regular season win against Central Michigan Friday November 13. Their 86-76 win over the unranked Chippewas proved to be a challenge, but one that Coach Doug Bruno had been expecting.
"They [CMU] are just a fearless team and it's a very important, good first game win for our basketball team," said Coach Bruno after the game.
The Demons struggled to knock down shots in the first half, but out rebounded the Chippewas on offense. Deidre Naughton had to be taken out for a few minutes due to a collision under the basket. She returned quickly and contributed to the rest of the half. The Demons lost the lead only twice in the first half and were able to come out with a four point lead (41-37) at half.
The Demons hiked up the intensity in the second half with outstanding performances by high scorer of the game, Keisha Hampton, Deidre Naughton, and Sam Quigley.
Jennifer Juergens was a consistant contributor throughout the game, but knew that the team needed to step it up in the second half "I think we picked up our intensity," said Juergens. "I feel in the first half we got into a little lull."
Coach Bruno says he is still getting to know the team and that it will take more time, but he is really starting to see how mentally and physically tough this DePaul Blue Demons team is . "I love the grit of this basketball team," he said.
The Demons next face off against North Dakota State at 6 pm on November 15.
