The Sullivan Athletic Center was packed with eager students on Thursday night-Seth Meyers, Saturday Night Live co-head writer of Weekend Update fame, came to campus. Meyers went to Northwestern in Evanston and worked for a time in the Chicago restaurant Twisted Lizard.
He eventually attended Northwestern and admitted he was a fan of performing in front of college students. He asked the audience if there were any freshman in the audience and cheers and applause could be heard from around the room as they waved their hands in the air. Meyers joked, "You can always tell the freshman in the room because they raise their hands."
He went on to entertain the crowd with his stories about the two years he lived in Amsterdam. He told the crowd that after a year of living in Amsterdam, you start to talk like Matthew McConaughey, but after two years you started to talk like Owen Wilson.
He was very interactive with the audience, asking them questions and coming up with off the cuff jokes in response. I found it interesting how laid back the vibe was. He didn't come off as arrogant and seemed like he was having a genuinely good time with us.
He related to the college-aged group by telling jokes about drinking-he asked if we've ever experienced the time when you wake up and are super excited you're not hungover, only to realize you're still drunk. He followed that by talking about the times you are on the phone with somebody and you are trying to sound sober so you are extra friendly and use a lot of big words but not in the right way.
He mentioned how everyone uses text messaging now and that one time he got into trouble from a girl he was trying to contact. He explained that with T9, the auto-spell function on your phone, when you try to type "go" it shows "in" instead. He texted her "wanna go out tonight?" and she was offended. Meyers told us, "At first I was apologetic, but then I was mad at her-is that what you think I call it?"
I was surprised to see how many people showed up due to the fact that there will still tickets available the day of the show, but the gym was nearly full. People either met up with one another or came in swarms, but either way everyone was carrying handfuls of packs of gum. Five gum provided DAB with over 1500 lbs. for sponsorship at FEST and the overflow is being passes out at various events on campus.
Overall, the DePaul Activities Board provided us with a good show and the fact that it was free was even better.
